While the Clubhouse in Tempe, AZ is not one of my favorite venues in town (a couple of monitors in the back bar area would really help…), it does provide for some great bands on a regular basis. Last night’s State Radio experience being one of them. It cannot be understated how hard it is to write good message-based songs but State Radio has always made it seem effortless and even fun, with the same being said for their live performances. Being my first time seeing them I had expected a different sort of crowd, something like a “G-8 Protestor Light” vibe. I was pleasantly surprised by the variety and generally amicable nature of the crowd.

State Radio is by no means an angry protest band, preferring to dispense a truly positive message within well crafted lyrics and musical hooks. Even songs like “Fall of the American Empire” seemed to give the crowd the feeling that yes, things will be ok afterwards. Such a thing is easier with a great hook and your arms waving in the air though… They moved efficiently through their set list, forsaking much conversation and letting the tracks speak for themselves. Defined by lead singer Chad Stokes Urmston’s voice, the catchy hooks and messages of classic tracks like “CIA”, “Camilo” and “People to People” kept the crowd moving and well entertained while newer cuts like “Knights of Bostonia” gave creedence to their origins and showed the ability to have some fun too. The set list fully featured Creamy Radio tracks, helping us to enjoy the show even more. The show overall showed the talents of a road tested band with three albums under their belt. No songs felt like tired warhorses to them. My only complaint might be not getting anything unexpected like an odd cover or some other musical tangent from what is an obviously talented band. This type of complaint washed away easily with the encore selection of “Waitress” though… What was it I didn’t like again?
