While he may not have the name recognition of the spate of celebrities who have died in the last  month, most will recognize his handiwork. The multitalented artist worked in many fields, including producing and directing film, music videos, TV and radio. But he’s best remembered for his award-winning illustrations and design going as far back as the ’60s.

In the late ’60s, Wilkes was the art director for A&M Records, as well as the legendary Monterey Pop Festival. Through the ’60s and ’70s, he designed some of the most recognizable album covers of the era for artists like the Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin, Eric Clapton, Neil  Young, George Harrison and the Carpenters. He won a Grammy for the package design of the London Symphony Orchestra’s adaptation of Tommy.
