Having spent the last seven years on the road as a solo artist, Jesse Malin was looking for a change. The former frontman for the bands Heart Attack and D Generation had put out successfull albums, including Glitter in the Gutter (featuring a duet with Bruce Springsteen on “Broken Radio”) and the covers album On Your Sleeve (with great nods like “Everybodys Talkin’” and “Fairtyale of New York” with Bree Sharp). But Malin was looking for some new inspiration.
That inspiration came in the basement of an Avenue A bar, where Malin worked with a loose assemblage of musicians dubbed the St. Marks Social (including Don DiLego) and a revolving stable of friends like Ryan Adams and Brian Falon to put together his latest, Love It to Life. The album features Malin’s typical earnestness on a songs from the singalong-inviting opener “Burning the Bowery” to the driving barroom number “All the Way from Moscow.”

Bob Dylan’s forthcoming Christmas album — reflect on that for a moment — will be made available early to Citibank customers. Members of the bank’s rewards program will have early access to the album Christmas in the Heart. It may not match the sheer oddity of having a Bob Dylan song paired with a Victoria’s Secret commercial, but the idea of an artist so outspoken in the ’60s protest movement pairing with a TARP bank certainly does raise eyebrows.

To be fair, the proceeds from the album are earmarked for charity, so the unsavory relationship is serving some nobler purpose, but clearly the times, they are a-changin’. Or tangled up in green. Or positively Wall Street. Or whatever bad Dylan pun you want to use.

Ten years after the death of its frontman Mark Sandman, Morphine will be releasing a double-CD of unreleased and live tracks on October 6 title At Your Service.

The trio started in Cambridge, MA in the 1989, and quickly became favorites of the regional music scene with their unique sound. The band built their blues- and jazz-influence rock around arrangments of drums, saxophone and Sandman’s infamous two-string slide bass. (Sandman was close friends with Chris Ballew of The Presidents of the United States of America, who adopted similarly modified guitars for his own band.)

In 1993, they gained wide exposure with Cure for Pain, and while never reaching mainstream noteriety, they built on their indie following with subsequent releases. On July 3, 1999 Sandman died of a heart attack on stage while playing in Italy.

The forthcoming album’s title is a nod to Sandman’s standard show opening, “We are Morphine at your service.” The surviving members will be also be performnperforming a show in Cambridge, MA on September 27.
